I'm pleased to announce my upcoming historical novel, Heritage Lost, which tells about the waning years of the Timucua Indians—a noble society whose lives and culture once flourished.
Set during a turbulent era when Indigenous lives were sacrificed to the ambitions of colonial empires, my book honors the Timucua's rich legacy as part of Florida’s complex history.

HERITAGE LOST
A Historical Novel
What It’s About
In eighteenth-century Madrid, Joaquim de la Montoya, the rebellious son of a powerful aristocrat, is exiled to the Spanish colony of San Agustin in North America. His father hopes that service with a Franciscan order will help Joaquim prove himself worthy of inheriting the family’s vast fortune. Not long after his departure, Isabella—one of his many lovers—gives birth to their daughter in a convent.
In San Agustin, Joaquim is assigned to a Franciscan mission and tasked with overseeing Alonso, a bright, young Timucua Indian. Meanwhile, convinced Joaquim still loves her, Isabella leaves Spain with her daughter, determined to find him in La Florida. As the three lives move in seemingly different directions, fate drives them to unexpected ends.
Set against the backdrop of Spain’s waning influence in the New World and marked by colonial oppression, inter-tribal conflicts, and deadly epidemics, Heritage Lost is a visceral, creative portrayal of true events leading to the disintegration of a noble indigenous society.
